Ohio Bats White Nose Syndrome

In 2011, a mysterious disease, White Nose Syndrome (WNS), was confirmed Wayne National Forrest in a Lawrence County abandoned mine home of a colony of hibernating Ohio bats. White Nose Syndrome is a cruel disease in the form of a fungus that develops on the white tufts of a bat's nose and eventually spreads to other bats. WNS does not kill the bats directly but appears to awaken bats from hibernation too soon, which leads to starvation since there are no insects available for food.

Since the original discovery in Lawrence County, the disease has arrived in other counties throughout Ohio. Due to WNS, Ohio's bat populations are way down compared to 12 to 15 years ago. And, since most Ohio bats have a lifespan of over 20 years and generally give birth to a single pup a year, Ohio bats repopulate slowly.

Even with the decrease in the Ohio bat population, bats are recovering in many Ohio cities, causing numerous problems for homeowners and businesses who find colonies roosting in their buildings. Keep in mind that bats do more than physical destruction—they spread diseases through urine, feces, and body oils.

Are There 11, 12 or 13 Species Of Ohio Bats? A Bit Of Controversy!

The Ohio Department of Health states there are 11 species of Ohio Bats but Bat Conservation International at BATCON.ORG states there are twelve different bat species living in Ohio. Different sources on the internet claim there are between eleven and fourteen species of Ohio bats. Though there is some controversy on the number of different species of Ohio Bats, the Big Brown Bat, and the Little Brown Bat are the two species you’re most likely to find in your buildings.

" 'Twas 6 AM Wednesday and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Way up in my closet, there arose such a clatter, that I rose from my bed to see what was the matter.
